(Last Updated On: 02/19/2014)

Metabolism is one of the most misunderstood words related to training, and the weight loss industry companies know this very well. If you have a TV then there’s a chance you’ve seen a commercial for a pill claiming to speed up metabolism, with out doing anything different and no change in you diet. This is just crazy talk, and you could put your health at risk without exercising or being active while taking the pills. We are not trying to bash fat burners, in fact we recommend taking them. But they’re intended to assist people who exercise regularly and rigorously, it doesn’t matter how good a fat burner is, you will have to do your part. And forget the common saying ” oh they’re lucky, they have a fast metabolism”. Yes there is some factor where genetics have a role to play but its very small, in fact overweight people have a faster metabolism, because their body works harder to carry extra weight, its just not fast enough to offset their calorie intake. Those who claim to have a fast metabolism most likely already do the things we will talk about in this article, whether they know it or not.

What is Metabolism?

Before we get started lets take a look at what exactly metabolism is. Metabolism refers to how much energy your body uses, or how many calories you burn in a day. To measure your metabolism calculate your Basel Metabolic Rate or BMR which most professionals use. This will measures how many calories you burn at rest, or if you lied in bed all day. If you didn’t know ,”YES” your body burns calories even if you’re a couch potato. You can find a BMR calculator online and its really easy to do. Basically you add your calories burned once you’re actually moving around and doing stuff and add them to your BMR, and that will be your Metabolism. Now lets take a look on how to improve and boost your metabolism.

Eat a Protein and Fiber Breakfast
This puts your body to work immediately – your metabolic drive needs to rev-up to break down the food. Miss breakfast and your metabolism won’t jumpstart until lunchtime or whenever you get your first meal.

Stick to Fruits and Veggies
Digestive enzymes they contain will help your body digest food properly throughout the day. Green vegetables are particularly beneficial. Chlorophyll helps get rid of the body toxins. There’s a reason you parents have always pushed you to eat more veggies. They Work!

Drink Coffee or Green Tea
Caffeine gives your metabolism an incredible boost. With coffee try not to exceed more then 3 cups a day unless you like suffering from insomnia eventually. Drinking green tea is an important tool and catalyst to weight loss and speeding up your metabolism; it contains a potent antioxidant called epigallocatechin gallate.

Eat Small, Frequent Meals

People generally eat less overall when they eat small yet frequently. A common myth is that fasting or restricting your consumption of food will send your body into starvation mode. While there is little or no evidence that supports this it is true that malnutrition is never the solution to losing weight and may pose a serious risk to your health and have adverse effects in the long run.

Take Vitamin B
This vitamin will help your body metabolize protein, carbs and fats, as well as supporting the function of a healthy nervous system. In general it is good to take vitamins, so its a win win.

Lift Weights

Pound of muscle burns up to nine times the calories than a pound of fat. Building lean mass increases your metabolic rate and helps burn calories faster, even while at rest. Regular weight training can increase your resting metabolic rate by nearly 10 percent. Plus you will feel and look better.

Do Intense Interval Training
Because of the intensity, your session should not exceed 25 minutes. Interval training helps burn fat at an accelerated rate. Try it on an empty stomach to further to increase the fat-burning process. Cardio in the morning will jump start your body and you will feel better through out your day.

Avoid Alcohol
We know everybody has a drink now and then, if you drink alcohol, you’re also prone to eat 200 additional calories. The body tends to process alcohol preferentially, which makes it more likely that food calories will be stored as fat. If you must imbibe, stick to wine, which only dings you 70-80 calories per glass. Especially once you get up in age your metabolism slows down naturally.

Try Not To Stress
Stress hormones, like cortisol, stimulate fat cells deep in the abdomen to increase in size, encouraging storage of abdominal fat. Those hormones also can spark your appetite, leading to overeating. So think positive and relax, your metabolism will do the rest.

Follow this basic set of tips and you will notice a great improvement in your health and over all your self esteem will get a boost because you will feel better. Our final tip is make sure you GET ENOUGH SLEEP. If you rest your body will process carbs faster then if you are exhausted.
