Sometimes slower is better(100% Casein Protein) – especially when it comes to the rate of protein digestion. While rapid protein absorption is desirable directly before or after exercise, delayed release is probably more beneficial throughout the remainder of the day and night time.
Casein proteins are pH sensitive and gel in the acidic environment of the stomach. As a result, it can take more than twice as long for caseins to be broken-down into their amino acid subcomponents than whey and other protein sources. Because of their unique time-released traits, caseins are aptly described as anti-catabolic or muscle-protecting proteins. 100% Casein protein is ideal for use in between meals and before bed. Casein protein is sometimes known as “night time” protein because it’s ideal to have just before you go to bed.
The chocolate supreme has to be my favorite and the one I am currently using, once you get past the bad mixability it is actually a pretty dang good tasting protein. Optimum proteins taste good in general though.
Unfortunately casein tends to be clumpy, don’t even attempt to spoon stir it cause you will basically end up scooping it off the top. I found the best way was to use one of those magic bullet type mini blenders, or to just chug past the stuff floating on the top.
Only those who care about the recovery process done right will want to use this product. It last all night, you wake up fresh, ready to go, and you may not need breakfast, depending how late you take your casein shake. I was pleased with recovery and therefor gains I got while taking this casein protein from optimum nutrition.
I don’t mind paying a competitive price for a good product. This protein is about $1 per serving whereas others are a lot cheaper however with the quality of this product it’s not an issue for me. For those on a strict budget, maybe consider getting few extra bucks if you can, at least to use this product few times a week if not on the regular.
This is a great product by a trustworthy company. It keeps me full well into the morning hours, and has definitely added some muscle mass. It may seem a little pricey, so I’ll remind everyone that this doesn’t have to be a staple to one’s supplement stack. However, if you find yourself looking for a solid casein, ON’s 100% will do the job.
